Quadratic Food Engel Curves with Measurement Error: Evidence from a Budget Survey
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we estimate quadratic food Engel curves with measurement error using the 1994 Ethiopian Urban Household Budget Survey. In sharp contrast to the findings from developed countries, food share is found to increase with expenditure, and only starts to decline after some threshold level of expenditure. We establish the robustness of this inverted-U relationship by estimating a more flexible semiparametric model that corrects for the endogeneity of expenditure. The potential policy distortion that may result from neglecting the problem of measurement error in the estimation of Engel curves is also discussed. JEL Classification: C14, C21, D12, and I31.

When Does Food Stop Being a Luxury? Evidence from Quadratic Engel Curves with Measurement Error
Using quadratic Engel curves with measurement errors, we identify the proportion of urban households in Ethiopia for whom food exhibits the characteristics of a luxury commodity. The threshold welfare level beyond which food ceases to be a luxury is found to lie between the 35 and 47 percentiles of the total expenditure distribution. This suggests that policy aimed at reducing food poverty shou...

Abstract: On December 2010, the government of Iran ended the decades-long subsidy program for bread and energy products and launched the Targeted Subsidy Reform program that considerably raised prices of food products. The objective of the study was to measure welfare impacts of food price changes on Iranian urban households between two survey data of 2009/10 and 2011/12 which were taken from I...
متن کاملIdentifying the Independent Sources of Consumption Variation
By representing a system of budget shares as an approximate factor model we determine its rank, i.e. the number of common functional forms, or factors and we estimate a base of the factor space by means of approximate principal components. We assume that the extracted factors span the same space of basic Engel curves representing the fundamental forces driving consumers’ behaviour. We identify ...
متن کاملENGEL CURVES Entry for The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd edition
An Engel curve describes how a consumer’s purchases of a good like food varies as the consumer’s total resources such as income or total expenditures vary. Engel curves may also depend on demographic variables and other consumer characteristics. A good’s Engel curve determines its income elasticity, and hence whether the good is an inferior, normal, or luxury good. Empirical Engel curves are cl...
متن کاملAn Engel Curve for Variety
Standard approaches to measuring the welfare gains from variety take variety as exogenous to consumers. Empirically we observe an Engel curve for variety, with richer consumers purchasing a larger set of varieties than poor ones. I present a tractable model for analyzing the welfare gains from variety in the presence of this non-homotheticity. The model generates variety Engel curves through di...
